GABA Volunteers Needed for Upcoming Events

GABA Volunteer Positions and Their Descriptions For Supported Rides

Greater Arizona Bicycling Association always needs volunteers for their Outreach events, Day Ride event and Supported Rides events. Take a look at our different volunteer positions and their brief descriptions, this may make it easier for you to choose what position is right for you.

Volunteer Opportunities

Event Volunteer

A GABA "Event" can mean any of the following, but in no way is limited to: 
  • GABA's Spring & Fall Bike Swap Meets
  • GABA Tables at Perimeter Rides, Bike Fest, etc.
  • "Socials" - Ice Cream, Subway, Zoo Rides, Bagel Rides, etc.
  • Holiday Pot Luck
  • Special Monthly Club Meetings
  • GAP Ministries Bicycle Repair Days
  • Overnight or Supported Day Ride volunteer
  • And many more.
Qualifications:
  • Courteous people skills a plus!
  • Cooperative and flexible.
  • Understanding of GABA's policies, membership levels, ride options, etc, (if volunteering at a GABA Table).
Compensation:
  • Mileage reimbursement as dictated by event.
  • Supported Ride discounts as determined by Ride Organizer.

Event/Ride Organizer


In General: The Ride Organizer plans and coordinates the ride, before, during and after the event. The goal of the ride is to have a safe, quality and enjoyable ride with costs that do not exceed the ride budget. Ride Organizers do not have the option of cycling in the ride or tour they are responsible for leading. 

Qualifications:
  • Organized, responsible and self-motivated
  • Good people-skills
  • Previous volunteer or co-leading experience on a GABA Ride or Tour
  • Current GABA member
Compensation:
  • Meals and lodging while on a ride or tour. 
  • Mileage reimbursement.
  • Discounts on future events as determined by Supported Rides Coordinator.
SAG/Aid Station Volunteer

Responsibilities:
  • Provide ride participants with a variety of food & water, and other refreshments, at designated rest stops. 
  • Replenish water, ice and supplies as needed.
  • Public Relations - encourage, support and socialize with the riders.
  • Attend dinner/rider or staff meetings if applicable.
  • Arrive at designated SAG stops in time to set up ahead of the first riders.
  • Clean up SAG stop area at the end of each day.
Compensation:
  • Meals and lodging (overnight ride) while on ride or tour. 
  • Mileage reimbursement for private vehicles, fuel reimbursement for rented vehicles. 
  • Discounts on future events as determined by Ride Organizer. Do not have to be a GABA member or a bicyclist.

Sweep Driver Volunteer


Responsibilities:
  • Assist and transport, if necessary, ride participants and bikes for those who may need it, to the next SAG location, or to the end of the route for the day.
  • Drive the route completely, and assist as needed, until the last cyclist is in for the day.
  • Provide water as needed to ride participants.
  • Provide bike tubes, and pumps to stranded cyclists if needed.
  • Carry first aid equipment to provide as needed.
  • Public Relations - Encourage, support and socialize with the riders.
  • Attend nightly dinner/rider or staff meetings if applicable.
  • May need to perform "Shuttle Runs" when needed.
  • Assist with signage placements or retrievals as directed.
Compensation:
  • Meals and lodging (overnight ride) while on a ride or a tour.
  • Fuel reimbursement for rented vehicle, mileage reimbursement for personal vehicle.
  • Discounts on future events as determined by Ride Organizer. Must have valid driver's license, do not have to be a GABA member, or a bicyclist.
Baggage Truck Volunteer

Responsibilities:
  • Load, transport and unload baggage.
  • Assist with rider "sweep" (transporting bikes/riders), as needed.
  • Replenish ice, supplies and water (Gerry Cans or 65-Gallon receptacles) for SAG use, as directed by Ride Organizer (if needed).
  • Make fresh water or other supplies available at Camp Sites for ride participants, morning and evening (if needed).
  • Attend nightly dinner/rider or staff meetings if applicable.
  • Other responsibilities as directed by individual Ride Organizers.
  • Baggage truck must be open and ready to load each morning before riders leave town, and unloaded at camping and motel sites ahead of each rider at daily destinations.

Compensation:

  • Meals and lodging (overnight ride) while on a ride or tour.
  • Fuel reimbursement for rented vehicle.
  • Discounts on future events as determined by Ride Organizer. Must have a valid driver's license. Do not have to be a GABA member or a bicyclist.
